The banker, Lev Alexandrovich Nakhmanovich was extradited from Switzerland to Russia in 1997 on suspicion of embezzlement and held for three years. In 2004 charges against him were dropped. The court found that nearly a year of his imprisonment had been without legal foundation and ordered Moscow to pay him $21,000. Valentina Andreievna Dolkgova was arrested in December 2004 after taking part in an anti-Putin rally in Moscow. 7.3.2006 14:18 MSK Vakhid Murdashev kidnapped from "Chernokozovo" isolation unit Vakhid Murdashev Vakhid Murdashev CHECHNYA, Naursky Region. On March 2nd, Vakhid Murdashev, sentenced to 15 years, and present when President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Aslan Maskadov, was kidnapped by unknown men in a helicopter from the "Chernokozovo" isolation unit. Murdashev’s defense attorney Bey-Ali Elmurzayev, addressed an urgent telegram to the Chairman of the Supreme Court and Procurator-General of Russia concerning Murdashev’s appearance. The attorney sent a copy of the telegram on March 4th, to the Chechen National Rescue Committee (CHKNS). "We fear for his life and health. We request you to take urgent measures to determine his location and return him to the isolation unit. Murdashev turns to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation", writes Elmurzayev. CHKNS states that on February 25th, the Europe Human Rights Commissioner, Alvaro Hill-Robles visited the "Chernokozovo" isolation unit in the Naursky Region of Chechnya. Feb 24 (Interfax) - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said the recently passed Russian bill on nongovernmental organizations [NGOs] is still a concern. There are still several areas - NGO registration and their tax accounting - where the law lacks clarity, Arbour said on Friday at a press conference at the Interfax central office. The question is how the new law will be applied in practice, she said. The law comes into effect in April. The general understanding is that everything will depend on how the law is applied, Arbour said. It will be monitored very carefully both in Russia and abroad, she added.
