(RIA Novosti political commentator Vladimir Simonov) Hoping to succeed where his predecessor Vladimir Ustinov failed, new Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika has launched an effort to have scores of London-based Russian criminal suspects extradited. To find out why extradition cases have failed one after another, Chaika has deployed a joint team of experts to London. Prosecutors, Justice Ministry officials, and diplomats will meet with attorneys from England and Wales to analyze the cases of individuals included on Russian and sometimes Interpol wanted lists. The experts have been thoroughly briefed and given instructions to either find out exactly what kind of evidence British courts need to uphold extradition requests, or - if some fault is found with British judicial procedures, which is also possible - ask the courts to resume the hearings in a way ... >> full...

The Russian Foreign Ministry made a reference to the law, which prohibits foreigners to enter the state if it’s necessary for the national security. As Thomas de Waal said in a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, the rejection of visa is to all appearance conditioned by his engagement in the investigation of the Chechen problem for a long time. “Yes, I have written a book titled “Chechnya. Calamity in the Caucasus” but it was 10 years ago. May be I was refused a visa because I was a witness at the process of Ahmed Zakayev’s extradition. But 3 years have passed since that time. Thomas de Waal, who has previously worked in Moscow for the English-language Moscow Times, the BBC and the Times, said on Monday he had been due to attend the presentation of a Russian version of his book on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. But the Federal Migration Service refused him a visa. The service was not available for comment on Monday but in its letter refusing the application, which was obtained by Reuters, it cited a 1996 law that says a visa can be refused "in the aims of securing state security". From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/30/2006 1:07 PM 30-June-06 Chechen Refugees Fear Eviction People displaced by Chechnya’s conflicts face being moved on yet again as officials hurry to close refugee centres. By Laila Baisultanova in Grozny (CRS No. 346, 30-June-06) For the last three years, 72-year-old Khava Bumbarova has lived in one room in a temporary accommodation centre in the Chechen capital Grozny. “I live in a room three metres by four,” said the old woman, smiling faintly. “You can only fit two beds in, as you can see, and a bowl for washing.” Bumbarova’s room has only the barest furnishings - two iron beds with identical Red Cross blankets, a small table and some makeshift shelves - and lacks basic washing and toilet facilities. Now, Bumbarova faces losing this temporary refuge in Grozny’s Koltsov Street. The internally displaced persons, IDPs, who live there have been told to move out by July 1 because the building is ... >> full...
