From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/27/2006 2:02 PM Russia condemned in Chechen case From correspondents in Strasbourg 28-07-2006 IN a landmark ruling today, the European Court of Human Rights found Russia guilty of violating the "right to life" of a young Chechen who disappeared after a Russian general ordered him shot. Khadzimurat Yandiyev was last seen in the hands of Russian troops in February 2000. Television footage showed a general ordering the 25-year-old to be taken away and "rubbed out". His body has never been found but lawyers for his mother Fatima Bazorkina said the general's words made his fate clear. The court ruled Russia had violated a ban on arbitrary detention and failed to properly investigate his disappearance. "This is a landmark judgment with major importance for the hundreds of other Chechen disappearance cases still pending before the Court," said Ole Solvang, executive director of Russian Justice Initiative, in a statement released in Moscow. From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/27/2006 3:09 PM Court due to rule on Chechen case Publication time: 27 July 2006, 11:26 The European Court of Human Rights is set to rule in the case of a Chechen man who disappeared after being detained by Russian forces in 1999. The case was brought by the mother of Khadzi-Murat Yandiyev after she saw TV footage in which a Russian officer ordered her son to be shot. However, Russia says there was no formal order to execute Mr Yandiyev and no hard evidence that he is dead. This is the first such case the court is hearing from the Chechen conflict. Khadzi-Murat Yandiyev was arrested during the military campaign to regain control of the capital Grozny in 1999. His mother, Fatima Bazorkina, filed the complaint against Russia in 2001, saying the authorities failed to adequately investigate the case. She spent the last six years trying to find out what happened ... >> full...

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/14/2006 2:01 PM Bush thrusts democracy to fore before Putin talks By Douglas Busvine and Steve Holland ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush put democracy centre-stage ahead of a big-power summit, telling beleaguered Russian rights activists on Friday he would relay their concerns to President Vladimir Putin. But he signalled he would not jeopardise talks with Putin or the Group of Eight summit the Kremlin leader is hosting by clashing openly with him, saying he would instead raise his worries over an erosion of democracy in Russia privately.
