Russia Condemned for Chechnya Killings
Europe’s Top Human Rights Court Issues Ruling in Favor of Chechen Plaintiffs

(New York, October 12, 2006) – In a second historic decision on Chechnya this year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled today that Russia is responsible for the summary execution of five people in February 2000, Human Rights Watch said.
The ECHR held Russia accountable for the deaths of five members of the Estamirov family, who included a baby and a pregnant woman, failing to carry out an effective and adequate investigation into the circumstances of their deaths, and failing to provide any effective domestic remedy. The court also ordered Russia to pay the victims more than US$250,000 in material and moral damages. Russia has three months to appeal the ruling.

“This is a great victory for the family of the victims,” said Holly Cartner, ...

Chechen rights group ordered closed

MOSCOW, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Russian court has ordered a Chechen rights group which has exposed abuses in Chechnya in the past to close down.

Stanislav Dmitriyevsky of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society has vowed to appeal the ruling, linking the court decision to the recent killing of a Russian journalist who was a strong critic of Russia's actions in Chechnya, Mosnews reports.

Dmitriyevsky's group, which fought off a similar closure attempt last year, has come under increased official pressure in recent months, said the report. Earlier this year, he was given a two-year suspended sentence for allegedly inciting ethnic hatred. The group said prosecutors in the closure ruling cited a new law making it illegal for an non-government organization ...

Russian Federation: Russian Chechen Friendship Society closed under new NGO law

Press release, 10/13/2006

Amnesty International deplores the decision to close the Russian Chechen Friendship Society (RCFS). A court in the city of Nizhnii Novgorod ruled today to close down the RCFS which monitors human rights violations in Chechnya.

"Today's verdict appears to be the latest move in a carefully calculated strategy to get rid of an organization that has been outspoken on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Chechnya,” said Nicola Duckworth, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Programme at Amnesty International.

"The strategy started with the harassment of its activists, and escalated to simultaneous legal actions against the organization and its members in a further attempt to paralyze their work."

The court acted on a new law that makes it illegal for a non-governmental organization (NGO) to be headed by a person ...

Anna Politkovskaya: Kadyrov will never be Chechnya president

In her interview today to the special correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot," Anna Politkovskaya commented on Ramzan Kadyrov's carrier prospects and the stormy construction activities unfolded in the restless Russian province on the eve of the jubilee of Chechnya Prime Minister. We remind you that on Thursday, October 5, Kadyrov reached his 30 years - the age, at which he may become president under the Chechen Constitution.

"Despite the universal beastliness, set up by journalists who went in plenty to lick the known places in Tsontoroj and all our rest insane Russian VIP-managers, who found it a great honour to celebrate a 30 year jubilee of a certain individual premier of a tiny republic, I think that Kadyrov has poor prospects," Anna Politkovskaya spoke in a confident voice.

"I can't know whether Putin wants ...
