The ECHR held Russia accountable for the deaths of five members of the Estamirov family, who included a baby and a pregnant woman, failing to carry out an effective and adequate investigation into the circumstances of their deaths, and failing to provide any effective domestic remedy. The court also ordered Russia to pay the victims more than US$250,000 in material and moral damages. Stanislav Dmitriyevsky of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society has vowed to appeal the ruling, linking the court decision to the recent killing of a Russian journalist who was a strong critic of Russia's actions in Chechnya, Mosnews reports. Dmitriyevsky's group, which fought off a similar closure attempt last year, has come under increased official pressure in recent months, said the report. Earlier this year, he was given a two-year suspended sentence for allegedly inciting ethnic hatred. A court in the city of Nizhnii Novgorod ruled today to close down the RCFS which monitors human rights violations in Chechnya. "Today's verdict appears to be the latest move in a carefully calculated strategy to get rid of an organization that has been outspoken on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Chechnya,” said Nicola Duckworth, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Programme at Amnesty International. "The strategy started with the harassment of its activists, and escalated to simultaneous legal actions against the organization and its members in a further attempt to paralyze their work."
