Anna Politkovskaya's daughter is under constant guard

The daughter of Anna Politkovskaya, the murdered "Novaya Cazeta's"
journalist, is under constant guard. On the day when her mother was shot
dead, Vera was sitting in a car parked near the house and could probably
see the killer. The available videos have his unclear images, therefore,
the only investigation's hope is on Vera, the "Komsomolskaya Pravda"
asserts.

Anna Politkovskaya's murder investigation is considering three main
versions: a vengeance of the militiamen who found themselves, after her
publications, in prison or search; a conspiracy of the opponents of
Vladimir Putin and Chechen Premier Kadyrov; and also a vengeance of
former militants who have went over to the federal side. Besides,
Politkovskaya could be killed by Russian nationalists, since her name
was on the "execution list" compiled by the leaders of fascist-like
movements, the NEWSru.com informs.(*)

We remind you that Anna Politkovskaya, "Novaya Gazeta's" journalist,
murdered on Saturday October 7, a ...

Czech journalists response to Politkovskaya murder

PRAGUE - On October 9 the Czech Union of Journalists sent the following letter to the Russian ambassador to the Czech Republic in answer to Anna Politkovskaya’s assassination:

Your Excellency,

It was with great sadness that we heard about the assassination of our colleague Anna Politkovskaya whose death was undoubtedly linked to her work. Turning to the use of guns is the worst possible means of resolving disputes and is often used by those unable to verbally explain their actions. And the outcome is always repugnant.

We therefore appeal to you, as an official representative of Russia, to thoroughly investigate this contemptible crime, severely punish the guilty and make public the reason for Anna’s assassination.

Sincerely,

Miroslav Jelínek
Chairman of the Czech Union of Journalists

Relatives of killed in Nalchik wait for Constitutional court’s verdict
13.10.2006

"We, legal experts, consider that in the events in Nalchik were caused by numerous facts of prosecution against Moslems for their religious belief", - declared the executive director of the All-Russian public movement "For human rights" Lev Ponomarev at the press conference in Moscow devoted to the forthcoming anniversary to the tragical events in Nalchik of October 13, last year. "Unconditionally some representatives of the armed underground, connected with the Chechen insurgents, also participated in the action, but basically the young people, which, to all the attributes, had taken weapon in hands for the first time were lost", - ascertained Ponomarev. As the IA REGNUM correspondent reported, he characterized the tragical event as "a grandiose provocation" and emphasized that the young people being refused to perform religious rituals and exposed to ...

Russian-Chechen Friendship Society Closed

Russia -- Stanislav Dmitrievski, the head of the Russian-Chechen Friendship, in court, 3 Feb. 2006
Stanislav Dmitrievsky, the head of the Russian-Chechen Friendship, in court in February
(TASS)
PRAGUE, October 14, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Amnesty International has denounced the October 13 decision by a court in the Russian city of Nizhnii Novgorod to shut down the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society (RCFS).

The RCFS monitors human rights in Chechnya.

An Amnesty International spokesperson said the decision appears to be "the latest move in a carefully calculated strategy to get rid of an organization that has been outspoken on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Chechnya."

The court based its decision on a law that makes it illegal for a nongovernmental organization to be headed by a person convicted of "extremist" activities.

The executive director of the RCFS, Stanislav Dmitrievsky, was convicted in ...
