Kuznetsov's defender: authorities persecute best Russian advocates

The investigation materials in relation to Boris Kuznetsov, advocate of ex-senator from Kalmykia Levon Chakhmakhchyan, have been declared to be a state secret, Victor Parshutkin, defender of Kuznetsov who escaped from Russia, said to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent:

"I saw the materials of the case and state with all my responsibility that there are no state secrets in them. These are invented secrets.

...The authorities' patience in relation to a bright lawyer, who was brilliantly defending his clients on the basis of the law, has boiled out, and they used this pretext to somehow 'hook' him up. We are pretty often seeing campaigns of this sort against lawyers."

Human rights activists: LDPR deputy Abeltsev has slandered Trepashkin

The public committee "In Defence of Political Prisoner Advocate Mikhail Trepashkin" has addressed the RF General Public Prosecutor with a demand to hold investigation into the fact of slander in relation to ex-FSB officer Mikhail Trepashkin; the slander materials were disseminated on behalf of Sergey Abeltsev, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee for Security. Mikhail Kriger, chairman of the public committee, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about it.

Human rights activists have informed that the Internet portal of the Ural Institute of Applied Politics and Economy placed an interview of LDPR deputy Abeltsev, which, according to the web site data, had been first published in the newspaper "Argumenty i Fakty" (Arguments and Facts) on May 24, 2006, under the title "I Advised Him to Put a Pistol to His Head."

Case on toughening Trepashkin's custody mode returned to Nizhni Tagil

The Sverdlovsk Regional Court has returned the case on toughening Mikhail Trepashkin's custody regime back to the Tagilstroj District Court of the city of Nizhni Tagil. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent learnt about it from Lyubov Kosik, advocate of the ex-FSB officer who is serving his four-year imprisonment term.

We remind you that on March 9, 2007, the Tagilstroj District Court of Nizhni Tagil made a decision to transfer Mr Trepashkin, allegedly for admitted custody regime violations, from the colony-settlement, where he was serving his verdict, to the general custody colony.

The RF Supreme Court wishes to itself consider claims against Russia

On Monday, July 16, it became known that the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation (RF) is drafting a bill that assumes to vest it with the powers to consider the applications of Russian citizens who bring actions against the state.

This issue was discussed by the members of the Public Chamber at the sitting of the Commission for Public Control Over Activity of Law Enforcement Bodies, Power Agencies and Reforming the Judicial-Legal System, the "Gazeta.Ru" reports with reference to Anatoly Kucherena, Chairman of the Commission.

In Mr Kucherena's opinion, the European Court can only compensate a citizen's moral damage, but it cannot rehabilitate him or her.

Dagestan debates on shooting down peaceful meeting

A roundtable was held in Dagestan on observance of human rights in the Republic with participation of Farid Babaev, Chairman of the Dagestan Branch of the "Yabloko" Party, Lev Ponomaryov, head of the Public Movement "For Human Rights," Upumazil Omarova, Ombudswoman at the President of Dagestan, members of the Human Rights Society "Memorial" and Public Chamber of Dagestan, representatives of public organizations and residents of the Dokuzparinskiy District of Dagestan.

One of the main topics discussed by the participants of the event was investigation into shooting down of a peaceful meeting by representatives of law enforcement bodies last April in the Dokuzparinskiy District of Dagestan.
