Her commitment to exposing authoritarian abuses in Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the “dirty war” in Chechnya had made her a symbol of democratic conscience in both Russia and the West. (JPEG) We are now demanding that the competent authorities - under the United Nations or Council of Europe aegis for example - create an international commission of enquiry in order to establish the truth about Anna Politkovskaya’s murder on 7 October in Moscow. Twenty one journalists have already been murdered since Putin became Russia’s president in March 2000. Most of these murders has not been solved. The murder of Politkovskaya, one of the few reporters to have covered the situation in Chechnya since 1999, one who had received many international awards for her work, has taken ... >> full...

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/7/2007 1:39 AM September 06, 2007 POLITKOVSKAYA AND LITVINENKO MURDER CASES REMAIN CONTROVERSIAL By Pavel Felgenhauer Investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya, my friend and colleague from Novaya gazeta newspaper, was shot to death in an elevator in her apartment building last October. Anna was an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin’s policy in Chechnya. Our newspaper began a serious independent investigation, as we did not have much hope that the authorities would do anything to find the true culprits. Last June I insisted that Novaya gazeta must go forward and immediately publish the evidence we have gathered about the murder, before the authorities falsely pin the blame on Putin’s political foes, like the self-exiled oligarch Boris Berezovsky. Still it was decided to hold back, to not compromise the official investigation that was still moving in the right direction, albeit slowly. The small team of independent investigators at Novaya gazeta believed in ... >> full...

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/8/2007 12:47 AM 5 September 2007 Confusion and turnarounds feed doubts about the capacity of justice system to solve murder of Anna Politkovskaya “The many twists and turns in the case since last week’s announcement of the arrest of ten suspects in the 7 October 2006 murder of Anna Politkovskaya are feeding our doubts over the capacity and determination of the Russian authorities to solve it, nearly a year after the brutal killing of the journalist,” Reporters Without Borders said today. “Attempts to discredit the case, orchestrated since prosecutor general Yuri Chaika announced the arrests, by those who have reasons not to want the murder solved, have not been any more helpful,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said. “All this should not allow the most important issue to be overlooked, namely that the security forces apparently provided assistance to organised crime to murder the journalist,” the organisation said. “Successive statements, ... >> full...
